Insurance is a border requirement as well as a day-to-day protection. The Ministry of Trade requires a valid motor-liability policy for a foreign vehicle entering Türkiye. If your international Green Card certificate is being used, make sure Türkiye (TR) is covered and has not been crossed out, and check that the policy dates include your planned stay.
Check the policy before departure
Match the registration number and vehicle details on the policy to the car. Confirm the territorial coverage, start and end dates and the insurer's claims contact. A comprehensive policy does not replace compulsory third-party motor liability cover. If your existing insurance is absent or not valid in Türkiye, the Ministry says a policy can be arranged near the customs office on arrival. See the current Ministry of Trade vehicle FAQ.
If a collision happens
First make sure people are safe and contact emergency services when needed. Follow the instructions of police or gendarmerie, document the scene and vehicle positions when safe, exchange registration and insurance information, and notify the insurer promptly. For an injury or serious incident, do not rely only on a private note; official records may be required for the insurance claim.
Keep digital copies of the policy and vehicle documents somewhere accessible without mobile data. Before the trip, also check who is permitted to drive the car and how long it may stay. See our related guides to authorised drivers and vehicle deadlines and exit checks.
